What is at stake

Africa is governed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which has 54 members in the FIFA ranking. At a 48-team World Cup it has 9 places, one of them already taken by Morocco as a host. That leaves 8 to be won on the pitch, plus one more route through the inter-confederation play-off.

If the tournament grows to 64 teams — a proposal FIFA has been studying, see the 2030 guide — the simulator assumes 11 places to win here instead of 8. FIFA has published no allocation for a 64-team edition, so that figure simply scales the current one.

The highest-ranked CAF nation in the 7 October 2026 FIFA ranking is Morocco, 7th in the world.

How the simulator plays it

The 53 nations that have to qualify are drawn into eight groups of six or seven, seeded by FIFA ranking. Each pair meets once and the eight group winners qualify. The four best runners-up then play off — two semi-finals and a final, each over two legs — for Africa's place in the inter-confederation play-off.

Morocco, as one of the three main hosts, is already in and sits qualifying out.

What is official so far

For 2026 the Confederation of African Football used nine groups of six: the winners qualified and the four best runners-up played off for a place in the inter-confederation play-off. At the time of writing CAF had not published its format for 2030.

The simulator keeps the 2026 idea — win your group and you are in — and sizes it to the places available. Africa has nine places at a 48-team World Cup, one of them Morocco's, which leaves eight to win and therefore eight groups. A single group winner per place makes African qualifying one of the least forgiving: a strong side that finishes second has only the long play-off route left.

Who qualifies: simulated odds

These figures come from playing the entire campaign 20,000 times with the simulator's own match engine and the ratings in the table. They describe the model, not a forecast of real results four years out: squads change, and the draw for the real groups has not been made. How the simulation works.

No nation that has to qualify reaches the World Cup in nine simulated campaigns out of ten — with 8 places for 53 teams, nobody is safe.

Favoured but not safe: Senegal (89.1%), Algeria (82.0%), Côte d'Ivoire (80.7%), Nigeria (80.4%), Egypt (80.2%), Congo DR (69.2%), Cameroon (65.5%) and Mali (64.2%).

The real contest is among South Africa (39.0%), Tunisia (26.6%), Burkina Faso (26.5%) and Cabo Verde (21.6%). These are the campaigns where one result changes everything, and the ones most worth playing out yourself.

At the other end, 21 nations qualify in fewer than one campaign in fifty and two never do in 20,000 attempts. On average the simulation sends 8.6 of these 53 nations to the finals, more than the 8 direct places because of the inter-confederation play-off.

Every CAF nation, strongest first. Qualifying odds are the share of 20,000 simulated campaigns (48 teams) and 10,000 (64 teams) in which the nation reached the World Cup.
