What is at stake

Asia is governed by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which has 46 members in the FIFA ranking. At a 48-team World Cup it has 8 places. That leaves 8 to be won on the pitch, plus one more route through the inter-confederation play-off.

If the tournament grows to 64 teams — a proposal FIFA has been studying, see the 2030 guide — the simulator assumes 11 places to win here instead of 8. FIFA has published no allocation for a 64-team edition, so that figure simply scales the current one.

The highest-ranked AFC nation in the 7 October 2026 FIFA ranking is Japan, 17th in the world.

How the simulator plays it

The 20 lowest-ranked nations start with two-legged ties. The ten winners join the 26 highest-ranked nations in a second round of nine groups of four; the top two of each group advance. The third round is three groups of six, home and away. The top two of each group qualify, and so do the two best third-placed teams — eight places in all.

Asia's place in the inter-confederation play-off goes to its highest-ranked nation that missed out.

What is official so far

The Asian Football Confederation had not published its 2030 format at the time of writing. In 2026 it reported plans for an AFC Nations League, but the first edition tied to World Cup qualifying would be the 2032–33 one, which suggests 2030 will still be settled by a multi-round qualifying competition like the last.

The real 2026 competition ran to five rounds: after the group stages decided six places, a fourth round decided two more and a fifth produced the play-off entrant. The simulator compresses those last rounds into the third round's standings. The first three rounds follow the 2026 structure, except that second-round opponents meet once rather than twice.

Who qualifies: simulated odds

These figures come from playing the entire campaign 20,000 times with the simulator's own match engine and the ratings in the table. They describe the model, not a forecast of real results four years out: squads change, and the draw for the real groups has not been made. How the simulation works.

Four nations are close to certain: Japan (99.7%), IR Iran (99.1%), Australia (98.3%) and Korea Republic (97.5%) qualify in at least nine simulated campaigns out of ten.

Favoured but not safe: Saudi Arabia (82.8%), Uzbekistan (75.3%) and Qatar (64.0%).

The real contest is among Iraq (52.9%), United Arab Emirates (51.4%) and Jordan (35.4%). These are the campaigns where one result changes everything, and the ones most worth playing out yourself.

At the other end, 12 nations qualify in fewer than one campaign in fifty and 15 never do in 20,000 attempts. On average the simulation sends 8.5 of these 46 nations to the finals, more than the 8 direct places because of the inter-confederation play-off.

Every AFC nation, strongest first. Qualifying odds are the share of 20,000 simulated campaigns (48 teams) and 10,000 (64 teams) in which the nation reached the World Cup.
